How to Install a Ceiling Fan ?

When installing ceiling fans, there are a few points to keep in mind for safety reasons. First, the load-bearing capacity of the ceiling must be checked. The attachment must be able to support at least 4 times the weight of the fan. Braced against the solid ceiling, usually made of concrete, with screws and dowels (Picture 1).

Screwing into the load-bearing substructure of the ceiling is also possible (Picture 2).

In rooms equipped with suspended wooden or plasterboard ceilings, A Ceiling Fan for reasons of fall protection, but also to avoid resonance noises, the ceiling fan should never only be screwed to the plasterboard or wooden ceiling (Picture 3).

Not recommended installation

For false (gypsum) or grid ceilings, as are common in offices, we recommend the installation on the below slab (concrete)  (Picture 4 ) . This ensures a safe and vibration-free suspension of all of our ceiling fans.

When installing a ceiling fan, certain minimum distances must be maintained for safety reasons, but also for air flow reasons. Picture 5 shows these distances:

A: Distance to walls: should be at least 40 cm.

B: Distance to slopes: at least 15 cm horizontally.

C: Distance between blades and ceiling: at least

0.2 x fan Ø, except for extra-flat models. From a ceiling height of 3 m, “C” should be at least 0.3 times, from 5 m 0.6 times and above 0.8 times the ceiling fan diameter. For rooms with low ceilings, always use our extra-flat models!

D: Distance from lower edge of sash to floor:
at least 2.3 m (mandatory in commercial and public areas according to EN 60335-2-80, recommended in private areas).

Installation on sloped ceiling

From a room height of approx. 2.7 m or when installing on sloped  ceilings, we recommend using a longer ceiling rod. A ceiling fan always hangs vertically. Depending on the model, the suspension of our ceiling fans compensates for the angle of inclination of the ceiling (Picture 6, A).

The maximum possible slope per model can be found on the product dettails . For higher roof pitches, an on-site auxiliary structure in the form of a wedge made of wood or metal (B) is used, which ultimately enables the fan to be mounted on a horizontal surface.

To ensure that the blade of the ceiling fan does not hit the slope of the roof, a longer ceiling rod is required, which can easily be shortened to any intermediate size by sawing.

The following table shows the minimum distance (Picture 5, dimension C) depending on the angle of the roof or ceiling slope:

Design of ceiling fans in schools and classrooms

In Switzerland and France, ceiling fans have long been standard in schools. Relatively low investments are offset by high benefits through improving thermal comfort for teaching staff and students, combined with a reduction of air conditioning cost.

Here in our example the planner would like to use the

Eco Neo III model with a size of 132 cm,

According to Air flows in ceiling fans results in an effective area in the secondary air flow of 2.4 x 1.32 m, i.e. a circular area with a diameter of 3.168 m. These circular areas are distributed accordingly on the floor plan below. According to Picture 5 (how to install a ceiling fan), the distance between the ceiling and the blades should be at least 0.3 x fan Ø, i.e. 0.396 m.

The planner decides for reasons of  Optics ensure that the blades of the ceiling fans should be arranged at 2.7 m. From the dimension table on page 126, this results in the use of a 60 cm ceiling rod, which is shortened by (810 mm - 500 mm) 310 mm.

A central wall control FB-FNK ECO Hotel A #86200, which is attached to the wall near the teacher's desk, is used to control the fans together.

Alternatively, a version of the fans with a 0-10 VDC interface is used, which can be controlled in speed and direction via the building management system or the wired wall potentiometer POT-R 0-10V #86111

Design by Application

Ceiling fans also create more comfort for employees in the office and meeting room. ceiling fans are the cost-effective choice both in terms of purchase and, more importantly, in terms of the subsequent energy cost savings. The design is based on the effective area with 2.4 times the diameter of the fan according to Air flows in ceiling fans.

What is important here is the individual control of the ceiling fans using a remote control or wall control, as everyone experiences moving air differently.

Design of ceiling fans in hotel rooms

In many hotel rooms they are now a well-rehearsed team: the ventilation system and the ceiling fan. The ventilation system ensures that used air is exchanged for fresh air and transports any moisture to the outside. A ceiling fan improves the guest's thermal comfort at higher temperatures or better distributes conditioned air. And by the way, a ceiling fan with or without a light can be a very decorative piece of furniture in a hotel room. Here too, the low consumption and the relatively low purchase costs speak in favor of using ceiling fans.
